Looks can be
deceiving- these ingeniously designed islands are actually disguised oil
drilling operations! Lights, concealed drills, and waterfalls effortlessly work
together to completely hide the sights and sounds of machinery. Each island-
respectively named Grissom, Freeman, White, and Chaffee, are named for American astronauts who lost
their lives while in service.
The Queen Mary
As one of Long Beach's
most famous attractions, you'll get up an up close view to the Queen Mary.
Beginning the first of many successful transatlantic trips in 1936, served as
lodging for royalty, celebrities, and during World War II, served as a troop transport. While in use as a transport, the Queen Mary
was repainted a dull camouflaged grey; earning the nickname “Grey Ghost” on the
seas due to her speed and color. She was the largest and fastest troop ship,
and had the capabilities to transport
16,000 servicemen at a time. Be sure to see the Queen Mary's neighbor- a
decommissioned Soviet submarine the "Scorpion".
Wyland Whaling Wall
At 1280 feet long and 105 feet high, the Wyland
Whaling Wall is the largest mural in the world. Painted by an army of 200
volunteers, it took 7,000 gallons of paint to depict this lively array of grey
whales, pacific dolphins, pilot and blue whales, and more.
Originally a famous
bathhouse resort and amusement zone, this turn of the century area has been
converted into Long Beach's hottest shopping district. A fun-loving blend of
restaurants, shops, boutiques, and specialty venues all can be found here!
Aquarium of the Pacific
This world class aquarium houses over 11,000 marine animals and highlights over 19 major Pacific Ocean habitats and 32 smaller focus exhibits.
